Appalachian Festival Is Back Mother's Day Weekend

Appalachian Festival Is Back Mother's Day Weekend

Mother’s Day weekend in Cincinnati just isn’t the same without the region’s most popular spring festival – the Appalachian Festival. And the three day event is back – May 11 to 13 at Coney Island – packed with down home fun for the whole family.

The 43rd annual Appalachian Festival -- presented by The Appalachian Community Development Association to help raise awareness of Appalachian culture – will re-create authentic mountain life with music from the hills performed by great bluegrass musicians, foot stompin’ dance performances, storytelling, more than 100 hand-craft artisans, a pioneer village and multi-media coal mining exhibit, and mouth watering mountain cooking.

73 years later, maps of veterans’ burial sites complete a long, strange trip

73 years later, maps of veterans’ burial sites complete a long, strange trip

CINCINNATI (FOX19) – In the throes of the Great Depression, workers with the Works Progress Administration, an agency that put unemployed people to work, created a set of maps intended to show every burial spot for veterans in Hamilton County, from the Revolutionary War through what was then called the World War.

Less than 20 years later, the records were transferred to microfiche, and in the 1970’s, the Hamilton County Recorder’s Office made what could have been a costly decision.  They decided to get rid of the books, not knowing that the printed text would last better than the microfiche, which has been deteriorating, frustrating historians and genealogists for decades.

Wednesday, the original books were unveiled, having survived a series of moves that might have led to their disappearance, if a few people hadn’t sought to preserve them.

Parade of big names heads to Riverbend this summer

CINCINNATI (FOX19) – Americans' incomes may still be in recession, but you wouldn’t know it by the parade of big-time artists coming to Riverbend this season.

Here’s the latest schedule.  There are 30 dates between May and September, many of them featuring multiple acts.  Among those commanding so much interest that the cheapest seats are above $35: The Dave Matthews Band, Drake, Phish, Nickelback, Jimmy Buffett, and KISS.  That’s a list that leaves out such household names as Rod Stewart, Brad Paisley, Radiohead, The Doobie Brothers (as an opening act!), the Vans Warped Tour, and the first tour in many years for the Beach Boys.

Despite these expensive acts and pavilion seat tickets for some shows that go way over $100, there are bargains to be had, with tickets for a number of shows going for $25 or less on the newly renovated Astroturf lawn.
